The English as a Second Language program at Garden City High School services students in grades 9-12, follows the
New York State core curriculum and is aligned with the NYS Learning Standards for ESL. It is a program
designed to teach English to non-English speaking students
from any and all language backgrounds. It is a progressive
approach incorporating the four skills of language
acquisition - listening, speaking, reading and writing -
with emphasis on the academic content areas so that at all
levels of instruction, students are provided with the
necessary language tools to help them be successful in
the mainstream classroom.
Hello! My name is Marie Nuzzi and I am the ESL teacher at Garden City High School. I love teaching English as a Second Language because I not only have the opportunity to help my students become comfortable and successful in their new environment, but I also get the chance to learn about their cultures and their countries. Our classroom is a very friendly and interesting place, and we have many different activities that keep us very busy! Our ESL family consists of a variety of international representatives, each one bringing something special to enhance our global community. In addition to teaching ESL, I also teach Spanish, another very rewarding experience for me. Whether I am in my ESL class or my Spanish class, I enjoy being with my students! Outside the classroom, you can find me in still another challenging role as a United States Marine. Some of my hobbies include the "Three R's", but of a different sort -- running, reading, and researching on my computer! I am also an avid amateur photographer. I hope you enjoy our Website, and please don't forget to check out our links page. There is a multitude of resources there that I'm sure you'll find helpful and entertaining. They're not just for ESL students. There's something there for everyone!
